Biofeedback
| The biological
changes that are a part of the stress response are often unnoticeable. As an example,
although many think they can tell when their blood pressure is "up", they are
often wrong when it is objectively measured (with a sphygmomanometer) at that moment.
Moderate changes in heart rate are usually not noticed. Biofeedback is simply a method of making this information available in "real time". Non-invasive bioelectric instruments are attached, and with proper guidance you can learn to gain some (not complete) control over how you respond to stress by learning to control the indicators of stress. In a short time, with appropriate, but pleasant "homework", one can recognize and affect the way they respond to everyday stresses. A home training device is provided for continual practice for a few weeks. The "homework" does not have to be continued once this new way of responding to the world around you becomes integrated into your daily life. This results in less "wear and tear" on your body over time.
