Student Assistant; California Institute of Technology (1965-1966). Worked under Nobel Laureate R.W. Sperry. Performed "split-brain" surgeries on primates for research into the hemispheric differences of the brain. Designed multivariate experiments. Designed testing apparatuses and supervised construction. Participated in weekly, scientific meetings with Psychobiology faculty.

Licensed Marriage, Family and Child Counselor (CA, 1976); Clinical Member, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy: Treats patients with individual psychotherapy and/or biofeedback (for medical problems) upon referral from local physicians. Performs and interprets psychometric tests for clinical purposes. Served as supervisor for licensed Marriage, Family and Child Counselor Interns on an occasional basis. Invited to give numerous community talks on issues related to stress reduction, biofeedback and general health issues. Gave invited lectures to local high schools.
Research Associate, California Medical Clinic for Headache & Neurological Research Institute (currently, since 1994). Obtains medical and headache histories from new patients. Served as Sub-Investigator and Study Coordinator on phase 2-4 pharmaceutical clinical trials of migraine medications. Developed sEMG analytical procedures for headache patients. Performs and Scores Neuropsychological tests (MMSE, ADAS) on vascular and Alzheimer dementia patients. Performs CIBIS and CIBIC on dementia patients. Participates in in-house research. Co-discoverer of the use of intranasal lidocaine for acute migraine attacks. Published in Headache (3/1994).
Founder, Sandweiss Biofeedback Institute in 1977 in Beverly Hills, CA. First free-standing, outpatient, biofeedback clinic. Developed contracts with local hospitals for in-house departments. Published proprietary documents in clinical biofeedback. Successfully argued for a positive opinion from the California Medical Association regarding the inclusion of biofeedback as a mainstream medical therapy. Provided CEU training programs in conjunction with UCLA Extension. Developed standardized methods for electromyographic assessments. Designed EMG electrodes for special applications.
Creator, UCLA Extension and School of Medicines HEALTHTALK series (1985-1988). Produced a series of 16 audiocassettes on a variety of health topics for the general public. Negotiated contract, obtained approval from all involved departments and administrative offices (statewide), obtained trademark rights for UCLA from Chrysler Corp., chose faculty, directed audio-taping, proofed edits, developed packaging.
Creator, UCLA Extension and School of Medicines Clinical Biofeedback Certificate Program (1981-1988) in Department of Health Sciences. Served as Course Chairman. Designed curricula, chose faculty (nationwide), negotiated honoraria, obtained continuing education approvals, wrote and/or approved all course and promotional materials, lectured.
Department Head, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center Los Angeles, CA(1981-1989) Created a department of biofeedback and counseling for this mid-city general hospital on a contractual basis. Responsible for all decisions regarding the planning, setting-up and management on a day to day basis. Negotiated contract, designed department, purchased equipment, hired staff, set fees, dealt with all hospital departments and produced numerous joint programs. Created and participated in Community Educational Programs. Produced and appeared in promotional video tapes.
Member, Board of Directors, Biofeedback Society of California (1979-1996), President, 1986. Chaired all major committees. Served as Program Chairman for 8 Annual Statewide Conventions. Developed Training and Certification models which evolved into the current national system. Initiated WWW site.
Director, Biofeedback Laboratory, Coto Sports Research Center, Trabuco Canyon, CA. Designed high-technology feedback systems for Olympic level athletes. Worked with Vic Braden (Tennis) and Gideon Ariel (Biomechanics) in the development of novel methods for the enhancement of athletic performance (1978-1985).
Research Associate, UCLA Pain Control Unit, 1976-1980. Treated chronic pain patients in a hospital setting. Gave numerous talks (campus wide) on the role of biofeedback in chronic pain patients. Served as Training Director for biofeedback training program.
Consultant to the CEO, Autogenic Systems, Berkeley, CA. Provided an interface to the clinical community for this manufacturer of bioelectronic recording instrumentation. Served as Senior Editor of Handbook of Physiological Feedback (5 volumes). Consulted on emerging, non-invasive, recording technologies related to physiological feedback systems. (1976-1981). Produced nationwide seminars and training materials.
